Employee Spotlight – Joan T., Research and Development Technician

Posted On: November 6, 2018

Hi, my name is Joan and I currently work as a research and development technician. When I was hired 13 years ago, I never dreamed I was beginning my career at Basic American Foods.
Though the years, I have had several positions. I started as a laborer in packaging, had the opportunity to work in Yards and Grounds, and then in the QA lab. Now I’m in R&D and can say: “I love my job!”

What does a day in the life at BAF look like for you?
My day is never the same and I thrive on the challenge. Being a technician requires me to be very versatile. I can start the day weighing out formulas for a sensory panel, transitioning later to driving a forklift in the warehouse. I’ve had the opportunity to gain skill sets that I once considered out of my wheelhouse. Along the way and currently, I’ve had several mentors who were glad to share their knowledge and helped me grow as a person as well as a technician.

What BAF Value resonates with you most and why?
Make Things Better. BAF is committed to making a difference in the lives of its employees. The company is also very community-oriented, which I admire.

What is your signature dish or favorite thing to make in the kitchen?
I have a couple dishes that I pride myself in making. They are lasagna, enchiladas, and homemade chicken noodle soup. The best part of making these dishes is my family is always enthusiastic about gathering together to enjoy them.
